My friends, meet one of my new fave food/supplements out there, grass fed gelatin. I could go on and on about this stuff, but I’ll try and keep it short and sweet.
Gelatin comes from the skin, bones and connective tissues from animals. Yes, your first thought may be “gross” and I get it…but bear with me for a minute and learn about all the amazing things gelatin can do for you before you write it off.
Gelatin can help in all of the following areas:
- bone health
- gut health (optimal digestion, absorption, and elimination – allergies and sensitivities!!)
- joint pain
- dental health
- skin health
- weight loss
- fragile hair and nails
- wrinkles, cellulite and stretch marks (yes mamas!)

There are SO many uses for gelatin and one of the best ways to incorporate it into your diet is by making homemade bone broths for soup. Just make sure you are getting your bones from grassfed, organic sources, this part is OH SO IMPORTANT! This is also why I only use the Great Lakes gelatin for all my gelatin creations, it’s the only brand recommended by many of the health and wellness community people I admire, so I trust it.
My son’s favorite use of gelatin so far are these homemade vitamin, immune boosting gummies, which you can make it all sorts of fun shapes by buying silicon molds either online, I’ve used amazon, or I’ve also found some great ones at Michaels craft stores.
DIY Immune Boosting Gummies
Inspired by Wellness Mama
- 1/2 cup organic 100% juice (my fave is concord grape juice)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 2 tbsp grass fed gelatin powder (I’ve only used Great Lakes brand, orange label – the green label is for different purposes)
- Supplements of your choice (probiotics, vitamin/mineral complexes, herbal tinctures *see notes*)
Warm the juice and maple syrup on the stove on low heat. Once warm I have a whisk handy and I pour the gelatin in as I whisk to minimize clumps and lumps of gelatin, because they are not so appealing.
When everything is mixed and the gelatin is dissolved I remove it from the heat and strain it with a fine mesh strainer into a glass jar with a spout, this is optional, but since I really dislike any lumps I do it every time.
Then I quickly add supplements, mix well and pour into silicon molds. Place the molds into the freezer for 10 minutes then they should firm up enough to serve. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
*If you are feeding these to children it is important to dose supplements appropriately. My son will eat a batch in about 3 days, so I use 3 days worth of supplement doses per batch. For example I will put 3 scoops of his probiotic powder, 3 drops of his vitamin D supplement, 3 day dose of vitamin C powder, 3 days worth of an immune boosting liquid vitamin supplement and a few drops of an immune boosting herbal tincture (you can find all of these for kids, or adults, at health foods stores).*
